Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro has expressed what is expected of him at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The team, known as the Super Eagles, is currently in second place in Group A after two matches. They had a draw in their first match against Equatorial Guinea and a victory over the host nation, Ivory Coast, in their second match. With four points, the team is aiming to add another three points to their tally when they face Guinea-Bissau. However, even a draw could be enough for them to progress to the next stage of the tournament.
During a pre-match press conference, Peseiro, a Portuguese tactician, revealed that his objective, as stipulated in his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation, is to reach the final of the 2023 AFCON. He acknowledged that there is pressure to perform, but he wants to focus on winning and avoid creating unrealistic expectations. Peseiro is determined to give his best alongside his players, aiming for victory.
Peseiro also mentioned that 23-year-old central midfielder Alhassan Yusuf, who started in their first match of the competition, will not be available due to an injury. Yusuf has been restricted to individual training and will not be able to play in the upcoming match.
The Super Eagles last won the AFCON in 2013, with previous victories in 1994 and 1980. Winning the tournament again would be a significant achievement for the team and would bring great pride to the nation.
