Teboho Mokoena of South Africa played in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations match between South Africa and Mali at Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium on January 16, 2024 in Korhogo, Ivory Coast. During his time as a SuperSport player, Mokoena had a contract with a European buy-out clause of around €600,000 (±R12.3m).

However, his European suitors were not willing to pay that amount at the time. Mokoena has since joined the Brazilians and his current deal contains no European buy-out clause, as confirmed by the player’s representative in an exclusive interview.

He expressed his perspective on the previous buy-out clause, stating that anyone who paid that amount would get their money back ten-fold in a couple of years. Regarding his current contract with Sundowns, there is no buy-out clause.

Mokoena made it clear to Sundowns from the beginning that while his focus is on the club and South Africa, his ultimate goal is to play football at the highest level. The club is aware of this and has acknowledged that they won’t stand in his way if the right offer comes for both the player and the club.

The player’s representative emphasized that the club won’t let Mokoena walk away for nothing, but they have assured that if the offer is right for both the player and the club, they will not hinder his potential move.
