Junior Mendieta of Mamelodi Sundowns was captured during the Carling Knockout match between TS Galaxy and Mamelodi Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium on October 18, 2023 in Nelspruit, South Africa. There are indications from sources at the club that the Brazilians were in the process of releasing Zimbabwean player Divine Lunga and Ethiopian Abubeker Nasir, but they have now found a way to register Esquivel. It is stated that Matias (Esquivel) will take the place of his countryman Junior Mendieta, who is out injured for the rest of the season.
