Kalvin Phillips has expressed how his mood changed at Manchester City after Pep Guardiola criticized his weight. Guardiola labeled him “overweight” upon his return from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Phillips admitted that this was a turning point for him in Manchester, as it had a significant impact on his confidence and how he felt at the club.

He also mentioned that his family, particularly his mum, was not happy about the situation. Phillips, who faced delays in being named in City’s matchday squads after his return from the Middle East in December 2022, acknowledged that Guardiola was frustrated with him for not returning to training earlier than expected. He admitted to being 1.5kg over his weight target and explained that there was miscommunication regarding his return to training.

Phillips had intended to return earlier than the specified date due to his limited playing time for England during the tournament and a recent recovery from a shoulder injury. Guardiola wanted him to be involved in the friendlies immediately after the tournament, but there was confusion about the timing of his return.
