The home side dominated the game from the beginning. They missed a great opportunity to score when Darwin Nunez failed to beat the goalkeeper. Liverpool came close to breaking the deadlock when Harvy Elliot’s strike hit the woodwork.
However, Atalanta scored first through Gianluca Scamacca just before half time. In the second half, Liverpool made a triple substitution in response to Atalanta’s goal. Despite their efforts, Atalanta doubled their lead through Scamacca’s second goal.
Liverpool thought they had scored, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. Atalanta further extended their lead with a third goal by Mario PaĊĦalic. The goal came after some good build-up play by Teun Koopmeiners.
