The 32-year-old is currently on trial for drug trafficking. He is suspected of smuggling 1,360kg of cocaine through the port of the Belgian city, Antwerp, for transportation to the Netherlands in two separate shipments in 2020. He is facing charges of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing drugs. Despite this, he and his legal team have denied the charges.
According to phone taps obtained by the prosecution, the 50-cap Oranje international was directly involved in the shipment, transportation, and sale of the contraband. He also has another ongoing court case. In 2020, the former Ajax Amsterdam and Sevilla forward stabbed his cousin in the knee and was sentenced to 18 months in prison for that crime last year.
The attacker is currently in Russia and is appealing the verdict from that case. He is yet to attend a court hearing for his drug case.
