Football can be a funny game. Just a few months ago, Darrel Matsheke found himself at a crossroads in his career. With only a clearance and a lingering sadness over his previous experience with Kaizer Chiefs, Matsheke must have been constantly asking himself, “What next?”
Luckily for him, Casric Stars, an ambitious team in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, came to his rescue. Just as he was starting to come to terms with accepting a downgrade to the second tier, Stellenbosch FC unexpectedly entered the picture. Matsheke hadn’t signed with Casric Stars yet, so it made more sense for him to stay in the top division.
But one might question whether he should have handled this dilemma on a “first come, first served” basis. In an interview with Soccer Laduma’s Masebe Qina, Matsheke explains how he came to his decision. And it seems to have paid off, considering the success the club has enjoyed so far this season, including winning the Carling Knockout last month.
