Jimmy Kauleza, known as “Gusheshe” in the townships due to his association with the BMW model, gained recognition as a talented striker while playing for Free State Stars. Alongside other skilled players such as Duncan Lechesa, Tsweu Mokoro, and Goodman Mazibuko, Gusheshe’s abilities allowed him to outshine his competitors on the field. These competitors, including Gerald Raphahlela and the late Joas Magolego, attempted to stop the sleek “German machine” but were unsuccessful. Free State Stars’ franchise was eventually bought by the League, along with Ria Stars, resulting in the reduction of topflight clubs from 18 to 16. This led to Gusheshe’s transfer to Orlando Pirates.
In Johannesburg, Gusheshe sometimes found himself sitting on the bench, struggling to get playing time. Nonetheless, he managed to earn six caps for Bafana Bafana. Now, more than a decade after his retirement, the 46-year-old took the opportunity to speak with Soccer Laduma’s Zola Doda. The conversation primarily revolves around the national team’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations and includes some criticisms of the current coach, Hugo Broos.
