Cape Verde had already secured their spot in the round of 16 by winning their first two games against Ghana and Mozambique. Despite missing their star player Mohamed Salah, Egypt needed a victory to have a chance of advancing. The Blue Sharks took the lead just before halftime with a goal from Gilson Benchimol. However, Egypt equalized five minutes into the second half with a volley from Trezeguet. Mostafa Mohamed thought he had scored the winning goal in the 93rd minute, but Cape Verde managed to salvage a draw with a close-range goal from Bryan Teixeira. Egypt also advanced to the next round as Ghana failed to beat Mozambique in the other group game.
In the match between Ghana and Mozambique, Ghana made one change in their attack, replacing Inaki Williams with Joseph Paintsil on the right flank. Ghana took the lead after 15 minutes with a penalty converted by Jordan Ayew. Mozambique dominated the second half but struggled defensively, conceding a second penalty which Ayew scored after a handball. In the final minutes of the game, Mozambique was awarded a penalty of their own which Geny Catamo converted. They completed the comeback with a headed goal from Reinlido, leaving Ghana’s fate uncertain as they wait to see if they qualify as one of the best third-place finishers.
