Lyle Lakay, a former player for Mamelodi Sundowns, was surprised when he was released at the end of the 2021/22 season. Despite winning the Defender of the Season award, he holds no grudges against his former employers. He decided to join Cape Town City, a move influenced by his familiarity with the city, where he has a house.
His decision was not easy, especially because his wife was initially reluctant to move. However, his existing relationship with the club and coach Eric Tinkler made the transition smoother. The move to Cape Town was made easier by the fact that they already had a house there, and their son was also in Cape Town.
Subsequently, he joined SuperSport United, partly because of his familiarity with the club, having been there before, and also due to Coach Gavin Hunt, who gave him his debut in the PSL. Furthermore, the club’s participation in CAF at the beginning of the season contributed to his decision. Although he is mindful of his age, Lakay is not one to shy away from competition.
He believes that hard work will eventually lead to playing time, based on his track record of putting in the effort throughout his career.
