SuperSport United are eager to retain experienced defender Thulani Hlatshwayo. Hlatshwayo, a former Orlando Pirates defender, is nearing the end of his second season with Matsatsantsa, as his contract is due to expire at the end of June. Although SuperSport has triggered the option in his contract, there is a likelihood that the club will extend his stay for at least another season.
A new deal has not been finalized, but club spokesperson, Matthews, indicated that they are interested in keeping the 34-year-old at the club. He mentioned, “We will see how the season ends up before deciding on any extensions but Tyson is a great pro and character so we hope he will stay longer at the club,” to the Siya crew. In an interview with Soccer Laduma in March (edition 1367), Hlatshwayo expressed concern about his contract situation.
He highlighted his apprehension, especially due to his injury absence before returning in February. He explained, “It’s like if you were to ask me what’s my position with Bafana Bafana. I haven’t retired from Bafana Bafana, but what do I need for me to be eligible to play for Bafana?
It’s performance. And where is performance? It’s at your team, where the bread and butter is.”
The club’s decision on any contract extensions for Hlatshwayo is pending the conclusion of the season. The interview with Matthews and Hlatshwayo’s concerns about his contract were featured in the March edition of Soccer Laduma.
