Nine years have passed since the Chiefs last won a trophy, securing their league title in 2015. Former midfielder and Soweto giants’ crowd favorite, Khanye, feels that the club could have executed better planning. He believes that the team’s downfall stemmed from the fact that most of the players were nearing the end of their careers, highlighting the need for a strategy to introduce younger talent.
Khanye named players such as Tefu Mashamaite, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Pa Gaxa, Yeye Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala, and Bernard Parker as examples. The experience of these players made them strong contenders for trophies, but this also meant that there was less need for coaching. Khanye reminisces about how the team heavily relied on set-pieces for goal scoring and played transition football, which he believed was not sustainable in the long run.
Following subsequent changes, the team became disjointed, leading to difficulties in achieving the desired results, as per Khanye’s assessment.
